This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-159 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D with an inside diameter of 4.987 in (126.67 mm), a cross section of 0.103 in (2.62 mm), and an outside diameter of 5.193 in (131.9 mm), catalogued under part number TST159. It installs on the low-pressure side of an o-ring to prevent extrusion into the clearance gap at elevated pressure.

This material stands up to strong acids and bases, oxidizing media, and steam. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) delivers a very wide continuous service temperature range and non-stick, non-contaminating surface characteristics. Service temperature is rated from -65°F (-53.9°C) through 500°F (260°C). Applications involving elemental fluorine at temperature or molten alkali metals call for a different compound.
