This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-163 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D supplied with an inside diameter of 5.987 in (152.07 mm), a cross section of 0.103 in (2.62 mm), and an outside diameter of 6.193 in (157.3 mm), catalogued under part number TST163. It installs on the low-pressure side of an o-ring to prevent extrusion into the clearance gap at elevated pressure.

It resists solvents, strong acids and bases, and steam. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) delivers non-stick, non-contaminating surface characteristics and near-universal chemical inertness. Published continuous service range is -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). Exposure to service requiring elastic recovery or molten alkali metals will shorten service life.
