This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-172 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D built to an inside diameter of 8.237 in (209.22 mm), a cross section of 0.103 in (2.62 mm), and an outside diameter of 8.443 in (214.45 mm), catalogued under part number TST172. It bridges the extrusion gap so the primary seal holds its shape under load.

PTFE (Teflon) is specified here for very wide continuous service temperature range and non-stick, non-contaminating surface characteristics. Expect good resistance to solvents, steam, and nearly all industrial chemicals. Published continuous service range is -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). Exposure to molten alkali metals or elemental fluorine at temperature will shorten service life.

It sees regular use in food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biotech, and chemical processing.
