This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-178 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D supplied with an inside diameter of 9.737 in (247.32 mm), a cross section of 0.103 in (2.62 mm), and an outside diameter of 9.943 in (252.55 mm), catalogued under part number TST178. It allows a standard o-ring to operate at higher pressures than it could unsupported.

As a material, PTFE (Teflon) offers near-universal chemical inertness and a very wide continuous service temperature range. Expect good resistance to steam, strong acids and bases, and nearly all industrial chemicals. The material carries a published service range of -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). Exposure to service requiring elastic recovery or molten alkali metals will shorten service life.

Typical settings include food and beverage, semiconductor fabrication, and pharmaceutical and biotech.
