A back-up ring bridges the extrusion gap so the primary seal holds its shape under load.

Expect good resistance to oxidizing media, strong acids and bases, and nearly all industrial chemicals. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) is valued for non-stick, non-contaminating surface characteristics and a very wide continuous service temperature range. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C) in continuous service. Exposure to molten alkali metals or elemental fluorine at temperature will shorten service life.
