This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-271 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D built to an inside diameter of 9.234 in (234.54 mm), a cross section of 0.139 in (3.53 mm), and an outside diameter of 9.512 in (241.6 mm), catalogued under part number TST271. It allows a standard o-ring to operate at higher pressures than it could unsupported.

As a material, PTFE (Teflon) is widely chosen for non-stick, non-contaminating surface characteristics and near-universal chemical inertness. The compound resists oxidizing media, nearly all industrial chemicals, and solvents. The material carries a published service range of -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). It should not be specified for service in service requiring elastic recovery or elemental fluorine at temperature.

It sees regular use in semiconductor fabrication, pharmaceutical and biotech, and food and beverage.
