This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-283 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D built to an inside diameter of 16.955 in (430.66 mm), a cross section of 0.139 in (3.53 mm), and an outside diameter of 17.233 in (437.72 mm), catalogued under part number TST283. It installs on the low-pressure side of an o-ring to prevent extrusion into the clearance gap at elevated pressure.

This material stands up to nearly all industrial chemicals, strong acids and bases, and solvents. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) is widely chosen for near-universal chemical inertness and one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C) in continuous service. It should not be specified for service in service requiring elastic recovery or molten alkali metals.
