This back-up ring is supplied in AS568-456 white PTFE (Teflon) 55 Shore D measuring an inside diameter of 13.475 in (342.27 mm), a cross section of 0.275 in (6.99 mm), and an outside diameter of 14.025 in (356.24 mm), catalogued under part number TST456. It allows a standard o-ring to operate at higher pressures than it could unsupported.

As a material, PTFE (Teflon) is widely chosen for excellent dielectric properties and near-universal chemical inertness. The compound resists oxidizing media, nearly all industrial chemicals, and solvents. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C) in continuous service. Applications involving service requiring elastic recovery or molten alkali metals call for a different compound.
