The back-up ring bridges the extrusion gap so the primary seal holds its shape under load.

The compound resists strong acids and bases, solvents, and nearly all industrial chemicals. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) is known for near-universal chemical inertness and a very wide continuous service temperature range. Service temperature is rated from -65°F (-53.9°C) through 500°F (260°C). Exposure to service requiring elastic recovery or elemental fluorine at temperature will shorten service life.

Typical settings include semiconductor fabrication, pharmaceutical and biotech, and aggressive-media pipelines.
