The back-up ring bridges the extrusion gap so the primary seal holds its shape under load.

It resists nearly all industrial chemicals, steam, and oxidizing media. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) offers a very wide continuous service temperature range and near-universal chemical inertness. Continuous operating temperature is published at -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). It is not the right choice where elemental fluorine at temperature or molten alkali metals are present.
