An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

The material holds up against engine and transmission fluids, aromatic hydrocarbons, and many acids. Viton® (FKM) is widely chosen for very low compression set at elevated temperature, excellent resistance to compression set and permeation. Service temperature is rated from -15°F (-26.1°C) through 400°F (204.4°C). Exposure to ketones and esters or hot water and steam will shorten service life.
