An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

The compound resists ozone and weathering, sour gas and amine inhibitors, and modern refrigerants. That behavior comes from the compound itself: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is known for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression, excellent abrasion and tear strength. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). Applications involving esters or strong oxidizing acids call for a different compound.

It sees regular use in automotive air conditioning, heavy-duty powertrain, and engine timing systems.
