An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

It resists ozone and weathering, petroleum oils and fuels, and modern refrigerants. That behavior comes from the compound itself: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is widely chosen for improved ozone and weathering resistance over standard nitrile, excellent abrasion and tear strength.
