It creates a positive seal at flange, piston and rod interfaces without added hardware.

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is specified here for long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty, excellent abrasion and tear strength. Expect good resistance to ozone and weathering, heat and oxidation, and petroleum oils and fuels. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). Exposure to ketones or esters will shorten service life.
