The o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

It resists sour gas and amine inhibitors, modern refrigerants, and heat and oxidation. That behavior comes from the compound itself: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is widely chosen for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression and the oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability.
