It seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

The compound resists petroleum oils and fuels, modern refrigerants, and sour gas and amine inhibitors. That behavior comes from the compound itself: HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) offers long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty, the oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability.
