It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

As a material, HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) delivers long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty, improved ozone and weathering resistance over standard nitrile. This material stands up to modern refrigerants, sour gas and amine inhibitors, and petroleum oils and fuels. The material carries a published service range of -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C).
