The o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

EPDM (EPR) is specified for strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations, outstanding weather, ozone and sunlight resistance. Expect good resistance to dilute acids and alkalis, brake fluid, and ketones. Continuous operating temperature is published at -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C). Applications involving petroleum oils and fuels or mineral oil-based lubricants call for a different compound.
