It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is specified here for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression and oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability. This material stands up to ozone and weathering, sour gas and amine inhibitors, and modern refrigerants. The material carries a published service range of -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). It is not the right choice where strong oxidizing acids or ketones are present.
