It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, Buna-N (Nitrile) offers strong abrasion and tear resistance, the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer. It resists propane and butane, petroleum-based oils, and hydraulic fluids. Published continuous service range is -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121.1°C). Applications involving ozone and direct sunlight or strong acids call for a different compound.
