An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, EPDM (EPR) is widely chosen for excellent hot water and steam resistance, good electrical insulating characteristics. Expect good resistance to phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, brake fluid, and ketones. Published continuous service range is -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C). Exposure to petroleum oils and fuels or aromatic hydrocarbons will shorten service life.
