It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is specified for the oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability, improved ozone and weathering resistance over standard nitrile. The material holds up against petroleum oils and fuels, heat and oxidation, and ozone and weathering. Rated temperature range runs from -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C) in continuous service. It should not be specified for service in esters or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
