It seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

As a material, HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is widely chosen for long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty, improved ozone and weathering resistance over standard nitrile. This material stands up to heat and oxidation, ozone and weathering, and modern refrigerants. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). It should not be specified for service in strong oxidizing acids or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
