An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is widely chosen for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression and the oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability. This material stands up to heat and oxidation, petroleum oils and fuels, and sour gas and amine inhibitors. Published continuous service range is -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). Applications involving strong oxidizing acids or esters call for a different compound.
