A back-up ring allows a standard o-ring to operate at higher pressures than it could unsupported.

As a material, Viton® (FKM) is valued for outstanding high-temperature capability and long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments. It resists petroleum oils and fuels, many acids, and chlorinated solvents. Published continuous service range is -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C).

It sees regular use in chemical processing, semiconductor equipment, and high-temperature process equipment.
