It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Neoprene (Chloroprene) is valued for inherent flame-retarding characteristics, a balanced combination of oil and weather resistance. It resists mild acids, moderate petroleum oil exposure, and refrigerants and ammonia. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 250°F (121.1°C). Exposure to chlorinated solvents or aromatic hydrocarbons will shorten service life.
