As a material, EPDM (EPR) offers good electrical insulating characteristics, strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations. The material holds up against dilute acids and alkalis, phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, and water and steam. Service temperature is rated from -65°F (-53.9°C) through 300°F (148.9°C). Exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons or mineral oil-based lubricants will shorten service life.

Typical settings include solar and roofing assemblies, water and steam systems, and brake and phosphate ester systems.
