An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, EPDM (EPR) is specified for very good flexibility at low temperature, strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations. The compound resists phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, ketones, and ozone, UV and weathering. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C) in continuous service. Exposure to mineral oil-based lubricants or aromatic hydrocarbons will shorten service life.
