An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

This material stands up to phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, water and steam, and ketones. EPDM (EPR) is specified for very good flexibility at low temperature and good electrical insulating characteristics. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C) in continuous service. Applications involving aromatic hydrocarbons or petroleum oils and fuels call for a different compound.
