It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

As a material, EPDM (EPR) is specified for excellent hot water and steam resistance, very good flexibility at low temperature. Expect good resistance to phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, ketones, and water and steam. The material carries a published service range of -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C). It should not be specified for service in petroleum oils and fuels or aromatic hydrocarbons.
