An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

EPDM (EPR) is specified here for outstanding weather, ozone and sunlight resistance, strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations. The material holds up against brake fluid, water and steam, and dilute acids and alkalis. Service temperature is rated from -65°F (-53.9°C) through 300°F (148.9°C). It should not be specified for service in petroleum oils and fuels or mineral oil-based lubricants.
