An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

The compound resists ozone, UV and weathering, brake fluid, and ketones. EPDM (EPR) is specified for good electrical insulating characteristics, outstanding weather, ozone and sunlight resistance. Rated temperature range runs from -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C) in continuous service. Applications involving mineral oil-based lubricants or petroleum oils and fuels call for a different compound.
