It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

Expect good resistance to phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, brake fluid, and dilute acids and alkalis. That behavior comes from the compound itself: EPDM (EPR) is known for strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations, very good flexibility at low temperature. The material carries a published service range of -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C). Exposure to mineral oil-based lubricants or aromatic hydrocarbons will shorten service life.
