It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

The compound resists phosphate ester hydraulic fluids, water and steam, and ozone, UV and weathering. That behavior comes from the compound itself: EPDM (EPR) is widely chosen for good electrical insulating characteristics and very good flexibility at low temperature. Service temperature is rated from -65°F (-53.9°C) through 300°F (148.9°C). Applications involving petroleum oils and fuels or mineral oil-based lubricants call for a different compound.
