The o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

The material holds up against dilute acids and alkalis, ketones, and ozone, UV and weathering. EPDM (EPR) offers excellent hot water and steam resistance, strong performance in outdoor and exposed installations. Continuous operating temperature is published at -65°F (-53.9°C) to 300°F (148.9°C). It should not be specified for service in aromatic hydrocarbons or mineral oil-based lubricants.

Common environments for this compound include brake and phosphate ester systems, HVAC and refrigeration, and potable water applications.
