It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

As a material, Viton® (FKM) delivers outstanding high-temperature capability and very low compression set at elevated temperature. This material stands up to many acids, aggressive chemicals, and engine and transmission fluids. Continuous operating temperature is published at -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C). Exposure to hot water and steam or ketones and esters will shorten service life.
