The o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

This material stands up to many acids, aromatic hydrocarbons, and petroleum oils and fuels. That behavior comes from the compound itself: Viton® (FKM) offers very low compression set at elevated temperature, excellent resistance to compression set and permeation. Rated temperature range runs from -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C) in continuous service. Applications involving amines or hot water and steam call for a different compound.
