The o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

Viton® (FKM) is specified here for long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments and very low compression set at elevated temperature. The material holds up against aggressive chemicals, engine and transmission fluids, and petroleum oils and fuels. Service temperature is rated from -15°F (-26.1°C) through 400°F (204.4°C). It should not be specified for service in low-molecular-weight organic acids or hot water and steam.
