An o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

As a material, Viton® (FKM) is widely chosen for long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments and the industry benchmark where nitrile reaches its thermal limit. It resists petroleum oils and fuels, chlorinated solvents, and aggressive chemicals. Rated temperature range runs from -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C) in continuous service. Exposure to amines or ketones and esters will shorten service life.

It sees regular use in oil and gas, aerospace, and high-temperature process equipment.
