An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

It resists petroleum oils and fuels, aromatic hydrocarbons, and engine and transmission fluids. That behavior comes from the compound itself: Viton® (FKM) offers very low compression set at elevated temperature and long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments. Rated temperature range runs from -15°F (-26.1°C) to 400°F (204.4°C) in continuous service. It is not the right choice where hot water and steam or low-molecular-weight organic acids are present.
