An o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

The material holds up against engine and transmission fluids, petroleum oils and fuels, and chlorinated solvents. That behavior comes from the compound itself: Viton® (FKM) is widely chosen for very low compression set at elevated temperature and long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments. Service temperature is rated from -15°F (-26.1°C) through 400°F (204.4°C). It should not be specified for service in low-molecular-weight organic acids or amines.
