It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is specified here for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression, improved ozone and weathering resistance over standard nitrile. Expect good resistance to modern refrigerants, ozone and weathering, and heat and oxidation. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 325°F (162.8°C). Exposure to esters or strong oxidizing acids will shorten service life.
