An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is specified for long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty, excellent abrasion and tear strength. The material holds up against ozone and weathering, petroleum oils and fuels, and sour gas and amine inhibitors. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 325°F (162.8°C). It should not be specified for service in ketones or strong oxidizing acids.

Typical settings include automotive air conditioning, oilfield and downhole equipment, and commercial refrigeration.
