An o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

Expect good resistance to heat and oxidation, modern refrigerants, and sour gas and amine inhibitors. HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is known for the oil resistance of nitrile with substantially better heat capability, excellent abrasion and tear strength. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C). Applications involving strong oxidizing acids or esters call for a different compound.

It sees regular use in engine timing systems, automotive air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration.
