It seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

As a material, HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile) is known for strong resistance to rapid gas decompression, long service life in refrigerant and oilfield duty. The compound resists heat and oxidation, petroleum oils and fuels, and sour gas and amine inhibitors. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 325°F (162.8°C).
