An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, Buna-N (Nitrile) is widely chosen for reliable performance in both static and dynamic service, the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer. The material holds up against propane and butane, greases and lubricants, and petroleum-based oils. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 250°F (121.1°C).
