It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

It resists many alcohols, petroleum-based oils, and propane and butane. That behavior comes from the compound itself: Buna-N (Nitrile) is valued for strong abrasion and tear resistance, the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer. Rated temperature range runs from -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121.1°C) in continuous service. It should not be specified for service in polar solvents or automotive brake fluid.
