An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Buna-N (Nitrile) offers the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer, strong abrasion and tear resistance. It resists propane and butane, petroleum-based oils, and hydraulic fluids. Continuous operating temperature is published at -40°F (-40°C) to 250°F (121.1°C). Applications involving polar solvents or automotive brake fluid call for a different compound.
