As a material, Viton® (FKM) is known for long service life in hot, chemically aggressive environments and very low compression set at elevated temperature. This material stands up to aromatic hydrocarbons, aggressive chemicals, and petroleum oils and fuels. Service temperature is rated from -15°F (-26.1°C) through 400°F (204.4°C). Applications involving hot water and steam or low-molecular-weight organic acids call for a different compound.

The compound meets FDA requirements for food contact, carries NSF listing, and is metal detectable for HACCP and foreign-body control programs. It sees regular use in automotive fuel systems, high-temperature process equipment, and semiconductor equipment.
