It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Silicone is specified here for very good compression set resistance across its range, physiological inertness and low toxicity. The material holds up against extreme heat and cold, ozone and UV exposure, and many oxidizing chemicals. Rated temperature range runs from -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C) in continuous service.
